(Hong Kong - September 25, 2024) China unveiled its first 5-ton/day hydrogen expansion hydrogen liquefaction system in Beijing. According to the strategic cooperation framework agreement signed on September 9 between the Dingzhou Municipal Government, Hebei Risun Energy Co., Ltd., and the Beijing Aerospace Testing Technology Institute, this system will be deployed at Risun, establishing a liquid hydrogen plant in the Dingzhou Park of Risun Group, and creating a 5-ton/day liquid hydrogen demonstration project.

Developed by the Beijing Aerospace Testing Technology Institute of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (referred to as "Aerospace 101 Institute") and Aerospace Hydrogen Energy Technology Co., Ltd., this system represents a significant breakthrough in China's large-scale hydrogen liquefaction field. It not only breaks nearly a century of foreign technological blockade but also opens the door to the commercialization of civilian liquid hydrogen in China.

Significance of Liquid Hydrogen

Liquid hydrogen is a crucial pathway for efficient hydrogen storage and transportation, promoting energy strategic transformation and green, low-carbon development. Aerospace 101 Institute, focusing on the bottlenecks of the hydrogen energy industry, has successfully developed its own hydrogen liquefaction technology after years of research. As the world's largest independent coke producer and supplier, the world's second-largest caprolactam producer, the largest hydrogen supplier in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, and one of the first certified clean hydrogen enterprises in China, Risun Group is actively expanding into the liquid hydrogen market. In collaboration with the Dingzhou government and Aerospace 101 Institute, Risun is promoting the implementation of proprietary hydrogen liquefaction technology, establishing a comprehensive hydrogen industry chain covering production, storage, transportation, refueling, usage, and research. This includes cooperation in high-end hydrogen technology and advanced equipment applications, as well as high-end chemical products.

Chairman Yang Xuegang's Remarks

In his speech at the launch event, Risun Group Chairman Yang Xuegang highlighted that developing hydrogen energy is a strategic direction for Risun Group’s transformation. He emphasized the six advantages of the company: rich resources, favorable location, low cost, stable and reliable quality, advanced technology, and clean and low carbon. Risun has formed a high-purity hydrogen production capacity of 8,600 tons per year, which can reduce carbon emissions by 100,000 tons per year. The production scale and supply capacity of high-purity hydrogen have significantly improved, with hydrogen sales and revenue increasing rapidly. In the first half of this year, hydrogen sales exceeded 10 million cubic meters, doubling from the same period last year.

Future Expansion

Risun Group plans to continue expanding the hydrogen market, leveraging abundant hydrogen resources in its parks in Dingzhou, Xingtai, Tangshan, and Hohhot. The group aims to build four hydrogen supply bases, further solidifying its position as the largest high-purity hydrogen supplier in North China. The goal is to effectively provide society with Risun’s future 6 billion cubic meters of hydrogen resources.

Initiatives and Collaboration

  1. Liquid Hydrogen Demonstration Plant: Through the installation of the first domestic 5-ton/day liquid hydrogen demonstration device in Risun Group’s Dingzhou Park, Risun will pioneer the establishment of a comprehensive civilian liquid hydrogen industry system. This will facilitate the commercial application of hydrogen liquefaction technology, transforming Dingzhou Park into a multi-product  industrial base centered on hydrogen, including liquid hydrogen, gaseous hydrogen, methanol, synthetic ammonia, and liquid oxygen. This will support the aerospace industry.

  2. Transport Demonstration Routes: Establish liquid hydrogen transport demonstration routes from Dingzhou to Laiyuan and Dingzhou to Beijing, providing support for setting national  standards for liquid hydrogen road transport. This will also include the development of a liquid hydrogen transport network, gradually creating a nationwide liquid hydrogen supply network to address issues such as high  transport costs, short range, and low hydrogen refueling efficiency.

  3. Comprehensive Hydrogen Refueling Stations: Promote the construction of comprehensive hydrogen refueling stations for  gaseous and liquid hydrogen in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region,    implementing liquid hydrogen heavy truck operation projects to accelerate  the commercialization of liquid hydrogen heavy trucks.

  4. National Key Laboratory Participation:  Actively participate in the construction of the National Energy Liquid Hydrogen Technology Key Laboratory, collaborating with Aerospace 101 Institute to promote major scientific research. This includes tackling high-end hydrogen technology and advanced equipment application technology, jointly advancing the iterative upgrade of the country's first 30-ton/day liquefaction device, and achieving the development,  manufacture, and deployment of larger-scale liquid hydrogen equipment.

The cooperation between Risun Group, Aerospace 101 Institute, and Aerospace Hydrogen Energy Technology Co., Ltd. exemplifies resource sharing, complementary strengths, and strong alliances. Both teams aim to jointly create innovative, leading domestic and international liquid hydrogen demonstration projects and a closed-loop liquid hydrogen ecosystem with significant social and commercial value. They also plan to expand comprehensive cooperation in high-end chemical fields such as modified materials and aerospace fuels.
